A one day workshop at CIASL, Kochi was organized by the Kairos Institute on Friday, 8th November 2019. CIASL Academy, the academic and training wing of Cochin International Aviation Services (CIASL), a wholly possessed subsidiary of Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL).
Sixty Five Logistics students and four faculties visited to CIASL to attend the one day workshop, basically to give students a visual experience on the warehouse and get more idea on air cargo operations. We reached the academy at sharp 9:00 am and we were asked to sit in the training room. Students were very eagerly waiting for listening to industrial higher authorities. We were given warm welcome by Dr. Joemon who was the Program coordinator of CIASL. He gave us an excellent outline of CIAL and airport operations.
After our tea break, the session was handled by Mr. Babu, who is also a staff of CIAL. He is experienced in air cargo section. For our logistics students the session was like reading an encyclopedia of air cargo operations. He gave us a whole idea on the types of cargo. Cochin International Airport is one of the leading International Air Cargo Centre’s in Southern part of India. The new Air Cargo Centre at Cochin International Airport was commissioned on 01st December 2000.
WAREHOUSE VISIT
After lunch the students were divided into 2 batches before entering into the warehouse of the airport. In the afternoon by 1:00 pm we visited the warehouse, Dr. Joemon guided one batch and Mr. Babu the other batch.
The facility has more than 100,000 sq. ft. of office and warehouse space dedicated for the cargo operations. The total area earmarked for the Cargo village is 50 acres. Separate areas are dedicated for the storage and handling of Domestic (in bound, out bound including courier) and international Cargo including the Transshipment cargo.
The entire International air cargo center is designated as a Customs Bonded area. It is equipped with modern automated and computer-controlled cargo terminals. Accommodates all aircraft loading: both narrow- and wide-body upper deck and narrow-body belly. One lakh square feet of warehouse and storage facilities, including climate-controlled areas and areas for inspection, assembly.
We were also shown different types of equipment’s used for lifting the cargo and containers to transport it to the aircraft. After visiting all cargo sections we were out of the warehouse by 5pm. All were given one day workshop certificate by Dr. Joemon.
