
Why is training so important?
According to Reid and Barrington, ‘Training is a planned process to modify in, skill, behavior or attitude through learning experience, to achieve effective performance in an activity or a range of activities. Its purpose in the work situation is to develop the abilities of the individual and to satisfy the current and future needs of the organization’. The main purpose of training is to link the gap between the desired and the actual knowledge, skill and behavioral required to carry out a job. Training offers a way of developing skills, enhancing productivity and quality of work.
Training is a learning process that implies the gaining of new knowledge, improving of skills, understanding concept, rules or changing of attitudes and behavior to improve the performance of the people. In order to improve quality, reduce accidents, absenteeism and HR turn over organizations need to implement fair training programmes. The central point of training is people in the non-managerial category. It imparts skills, attitude and knowledge for direct application to a task or job. Training effectiveness is essentially a measure that examines the degree to which training improved the employee’s knowledge, skill, and behavioral pattern within the organization as a result of the training.

TYPES OF TRAINING
Training is usually conducted for different purposes. Type of training are detailed below:
Introduction Training / orientation training
Introduction or orientation training is adopted for new recruits to make them productive as early as possible. The length of induction training will vary from job to job and will depend on the complexity of the job, the size of the business and the level or position of the job within the business. The major areas of induction training are; briefing about the duties of the job, meeting new colleagues, understanding the values and aims of the business, learning about the organizational structure and policies of the business etc.
Job training
This training is intended to enrich job related skills and knowledge of the workforce. It helps employees improve their performance by imparting new skills.
Safety training
The major purpose of this is to familiarize employees with health and safety standards and measures to avoid accident and physical injuries.
Refresher training
Refresher training occurs when employees need an up gradation in their existing know-how how to use a new technology, methods and procedures. This training aims to maintain the knowledge and skill of employees up to date and strengthens it.
Remedial training
This Training is meant for reviewing and correcting previously taught information or procedures. It is adopted when the trainees job performance is evaluated as less than acceptable after having been provided with sufficient training. It tries to overcome deficiency in the performance of the workforce.
