FAQs
Every hospital has doctors and nurses on the floor. Behind them is a team that keeps the hospital running: admissions, billing, insurance and TPA desks, medical records, quality audits, staffing and patient experience. Those people are hospital administrators.
If you have finished Plus Two (any stream) and want a healthcare career without NEET, hospital administration is one of the most practical routes in Kerala. Kochi alone has large multi-specialty hospitals such as Aster Medcity, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Rajagiri Hospital, VPS Lakeshore, and KIMSHEALTH, and healthcare employers across the state keep expanding their management teams.
This guide covers the courses available after 12th in Kerala, eligibility, realistic fees, what the syllabus teaches, how to compare institutes, and what careers look like. It is written by the Kairos Institute team, which trains students in hospital administration at its Kochi and Bengaluru campuses. We have said clearly where we are an option and where other routes may suit you better.
1. What is hospital administration?
Hospital administration (also called healthcare management or hospital management) is the field that covers the leadership, planning, and day-to-day management of hospitals and other healthcare organisations. Wikipedia's overview of health administration describes it as managing health systems, hospitals and hospital networks across primary, secondary, and tertiary care.
In practice, a hospital administrator works on:
patient flow: registration, admission and discharge
billing, insurance claims and TPA coordination
medical records and hospital management software (HMS)
quality and safety standards, including NABH accreditation
staffing, procurement and budgeting
patient relations and service quality
2. Hospital administration courses in Kerala after 12th
Course | Duration | Level | Suits you if... |
Certificate programmes | 3-6 months | Short skill course | You want to test the field or add a skill |
International Diploma in Hospital Administration | 6 months or 1 year | Diploma | You want to start working quickly |
BBA in Hospital Administration / Hospital Management | 3 years | Undergraduate degree | You want a degree, with an MBA or MHA option later |
MBA / MHA in Healthcare or Hospital Management | 2 years | Postgraduate (after any degree) | You are a graduate aiming at senior roles |
3. Eligibility: who can apply?
Your stage | Options | Typical requirement |
After 12th (Science, Commerce or Arts) | Diploma, BBA | Pass in Plus Two; BBA programmes commonly ask for 50% aggregate |
After any degree | Diploma, MBA / MHA | Bachelor's degree; MBA/MHA programmes may need an entrance exam (CAT, MAT, KMAT or a university test) |
After MBBS, BDS, nursing or allied health | MHA, MBA in Healthcare, advanced diploma | A clinical background is valued for senior roles |
You do not need a science background or NEET to study hospital administration after 12th. Always check the eligibility of the specific programme before applying, because it varies by institute and university.
4. Which course should you choose?
Choose the diploma if you want to start working within 6-12 months in roles such as front office, billing, patient services or insurance coordination. Kairos offers the International Diploma in Hospital Administration as a 6-month or 1-year programme, open after Plus Two or a degree.
Choose the BBA if you want a full degree and a long-term leadership track. Kairos offers the BBA in Hospital Administration, a 3-year programme with 12th-pass (50% aggregate) eligibility.
Choose an MBA or MHA if you already hold a degree and want to move into department head, operations or quality management roles.
A simple rule: diploma for speed, BBA for depth, MBA/MHA for seniority. Many students start with a diploma, work for a year or two, and then do a degree or MBA while employed.
5. Syllabus: what you will actually study
Programme names and modules differ by institute, but a good hospital administration curriculum covers:
Role of the hospital in healthcare, and hospital planning and design
Principles of management: planning, organising, directing and controlling
Healthcare finance and billing
Medical records and hospital information systems
Materials and supply management
Hospital infection control and biomedical waste disposal
Quality assurance, medical audit and accreditation (NABH)
Marketing and public relations for health services
Ethical and legal aspects of hospital administration
Disaster management
Out-patient, in-patient, nursing and clinical support services
Healthcare economics, organisational behaviour and strategic management (stronger in degree programmes)
Check before you enrol: does the syllabus include hands-on training with HMS software, insurance and TPA billing, and quality standards? If it only covers theory, you will struggle in your first job.
6. Fees in Kerala (2026-27)
Fees vary widely by institute type and course. The ranges below are indicative. Always confirm the current fee with the institute for your batch.
Course | Indicative total fee |
Certificate courses | Rs 15,000 - Rs 50,000 |
Diploma (6-12 months) | Rs 40,000 - Rs 1.25 lakh |
BBA (3 years) | Rs 1.8 lakh - Rs 3.6 lakh (private institutes) |
MBA / MHA (2 years) | Rs 1.5 lakh - Rs 6 lakh |
Beyond tuition, ask about exam and registration fees, study material, hostel costs and travel for internships. For a student living away from home in Kochi, living costs can add significantly to the total.

7. Hospital administration colleges and institutes in Kerala
Hospital administration courses in Kerala are offered by several kinds of institutions. Knowing the type helps you shortlist before you compare names.
Type of institution | What it usually offers | Best for | What to verify |
Medical institutes and university departments | Postgraduate programmes such as MHA or MBA in Hospital/Healthcare Management (for example, the MHA at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi) | Graduates aiming at senior management roles | Admission process, entrance exam, seat availability |
Arts and science or management colleges affiliated to a university | BBA or MBA with a hospital or healthcare management specialisation | Students who want a university degree in a campus setting | University affiliation and whether the programme is approved |
Specialised career-training institutes | Diploma and BBA programmes focused on hospital operations, with internships and placement support | Students who want practical training and a faster route to work | Who awards the certificate, named internship hospitals, placement record |
Online and distance platforms | Certificate and diploma programmes delivered online | Working professionals already in healthcare | Recognition of the certificate and whether any hands-on training is included |
Kairos Institute belongs to the third group. We offer a BBA in Hospital Administration and an International Diploma in Hospital Administration, with campuses in Kochi and Bengaluru and both online and offline learning.
Where students do practical training in Kerala: Kochi has a large cluster of multi-specialty hospitals, including Aster Medcity, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Rajagiri Hospital, VPS Lakeshore and KIMSHEALTH. Ask any institute which hospitals its students have actually trained at in the past two years, because that tells you more than a college ranking.
8. Studying hospital administration in Kochi
Kochi is Kerala's largest healthcare hub, with a dense cluster of tertiary-care hospitals, diagnostic chains and medical-tourism facilities. For a student, this means:
Internships close by: many hospitals are within commuting distance across Ernakulam, Vyttila, Edappally and Kakkanad.
Local job openings: hospitals in Kochi regularly recruit for front office, patient relations, billing, insurance and quality roles.
Lower living costs than Bengaluru or Mumbai.
Gulf pathways: many Kerala graduates move into GCC healthcare roles after gaining experience.
Kairos Institute runs hospital administration programmes at its Kochi campus, and also in Bengaluru for students who prefer a metro with a larger corporate-hospital ecosystem. If you are shortlisting the best hospital administration institute in Kochi, compare at least three and visit the campus before you decide.
9. How to choose the best hospital administration institute in Kerala
Ask every institute, including us:
Recognition: who awards the certificate: a university, a government skill body (such as NSDC), or the institute itself? Ask for it in writing.
Named internship hospitals: which hospitals have students interned at in the last two years? "Leading hospitals" is not an answer.
Placement record: how many students from the last batch were placed, where, and in which roles? Ask to speak to a recent student.
Faculty: are the trainers people who have worked in hospital administration?
Curriculum: does it include HMS software, TPA and insurance billing, NABH quality standards and medical records?
Total cost: what is included in the fee, and what is charged extra?
Learning mode: if you are a fresher, prefer classroom learning plus a real hospital internship over online-only.
10. Skills you need
You can build all of these during the course:
Communication and patient-handling skills
Leadership and teamwork
Analytical and problem-solving ability
Basic finance and spreadsheet skills
Comfort with software and data
Staying calm under pressure
Knowledge of healthcare processes and regulations
11. Careers, recruiters and salary
Common roles: front office executive, patient relations officer, billing and TPA coordinator, medical records officer, quality executive, department coordinator, assistant hospital administrator, and later hospital manager or operations head.
Where graduates work: multi-specialty hospitals in Kochi such as Aster Medcity, Amrita Hospital, Rajagiri Hospital, VPS Lakeshore and KIMSHEALTH; national hospital chains; insurance and TPA companies; diagnostic chains; and healthcare consulting and medical tourism firms.
Salary (indicative only):
Entry-level administration and coordinator roles: commonly around Rs 2.5 to 5 lakh per year in India
Experienced administrators and managers: wide ranges from about Rs 5 lakh to Rs 12 lakh and above, depending on city, hospital size and qualification
Gulf roles often pay more, but depend on experience and licensing
Salary platforms such as AmbitionBox report an average of roughly Rs 6.6 lakh per year for hospital administrators in India, with wide variation. Treat every figure as a guide: your actual pay depends on your employer, city, skills and experience.
